Deep Ecology : Becoming the Ecological Self

by Lunaya Shekinah

"The elements were bestowed on us by the stars, the complex compounds given to us by the young Earth, the informed sequences of the genes by the microorganisms, our limbs and organs by advanced life forms, and the linguistic symbols carrying our thoughts and feelings by the human venture. We could not see without the work of those who shaped the eye; Could not hear without the work of those who shaped the ear. The universe created these gifts, lavishing them upon us; Our first and deepest response is infinite gratitude."

- Brian Swimme, PhD

In this changing world, human beings face many unique personal and planetary challenges. In order to rise to those challenges, we are being invited as a species to explore the deepest levels of true power available to us as life forms, intextricably linked with all life. We are being invited, through the circumstances that we have created for ourselves, to undergo the sacred right of passage associated with taking responsibility for ourselves, in relationship to the whole.

Deep Ecology is a psychological approach to evolving the human relationship to life on earth, achnowledging ourselves as co-stewards to the current condition, who hold the keys to miraculous change. We need only understand and embrace that power in order to use it. Through deep ecology we explore a series of strategies for experientially shifting our perception of ourselves from isolated individuals, into the larger identity of one eternal cosmic whole, embodied here as gaia.

Around the Earth today, thousands of people are exploring deep ecology through workshops often called "councils of all beings". These range between 1 and 7 days long, exploring the fundamental concepts of deep ecology through talks, exercises, games, guided meditation, sharing, shamanic journeying and ritual.

These councils help people to expand their "ecological selves" with three main techniques. The first is through non-performance based ritual theatre, where people represent non human life forms, their concearns and blessings, in a "council of all beings". The second is a series of practices for creating sacred space for the expression and release of despair over the current planetary condition, and fears of the future. The third is the reclaiming of our personal history of evolution from the beginning of time and space, through our genetic memory : exploring the concept of "deep time".

Do a search on google and see what might be going on in your area. If there are no deep ecology workshops happening where you are, there are certainly a host of resources to get you started in exploring this empowering work on your own.
